Dear Parents/Carers,

It was lovely to be able to talk to you all on the phone last week about your children, their learning, their targets and their interests. We are looking forward to a time when we can have these conversations face to face. We are going to send the children’s profiles home for the weekend, of the 4th December ,for you to have a look at with your child. Please add photos and comments , telling us about your child at home. We really enjoy reading your comments! Please return the profile to nursery after the weekend. You get to keep this profile at the end of the year. I still have my daughter’s nursery profile and she is 31 year old! Keep safe and well, Rose.


Update on NHS Flu vaccination programme for 2-3 year olds


It’s more important than ever for those who need it to get their flu vaccination, to help protect us all from the threat of flu and COVID-19 this winter.


All children aged 2 and 3 years old can have a free flu vaccine at their GP practice. The vaccine is usually given as a single painless spray squirted up the nose. The nasal spray used for children does contain a highly processed form of porcine gelatine which helps to keep the vaccine stable. We know this can be a barrier to some children receiving the vaccine. The decision to receive the nasal spray is up to individuals.



Are you keeping hydrated?


If you often feel thirsty, It's likely; you're not! Although feeling thirsty is our bodies first hint, that we need fluids. It is a delayed response to dehydration.


When you feel thirsty, it's a sign; you are at least 2% dehydrated. We know, 2% does not sound like much! But considering we experience reduced mental and physical capacity at 1%, it is a significant amount. In the future, be mindful of this delayed response, and follow the recommendation of taking regular sips of fluids throughout the day, to ensure you avoid prolonged periods of dehydration.


Our children at Nursery, have access to fresh water all day and are encouraged to drink.

As a teacher, parent or carer, this is an essential habit to practise in young children, especially those unable to express or communicate when they feel thirsty. Remember, compared to adults, young children have a higher proportion of body water and reduced tolerance to heat. When you combine these factors with their constant movement and rapid growth, it's no surprise they are prone to dehydration.


Dehydration is easy to avoid by following NHS recommendations. These can be divided into three sub-categories 0-6 months, 6-12 months and 1-4 years, a result of dietary and nutritional needs.


0-6 months: Infants aged 0-6 months diet should exclusively consist of breastmilk or first infant formula. Breastfed babies do not require water. However, formula-fed babies may need some water, during hot weather. In which case, you will need to boil tap water first and then let it cool down. You will also need to boil tap water before you use it to prepare a feed with formula. Bottled water isn’t recommended for making up infant formula feeds as it may contain too much salt (sodium) or sulphate.


6-12 months: Breastmilk or first infant formula should be provided to infants until they are at least 1 year old. You do not need to introduce a follow on formula. Fully breastfed babies don’t need any water until they’ve started eating solid foods. Water for babies over 6 months does not need to be boiled. Using an open or a free flow cup without a valve will help babies learn to sip and is better for their teeth.


1-4 years: Breastmilk will continue to benefit infants for as long as the mother chooses to carry on. Formula milks aren’t needed once infants reach one year old, as cow’s milk can be introduced as a main drink. Once infants reach one year old, feeding from a bottle should be discouraged. It’s important to use a cup or beaker with a free flow lid so that infants learn how to sip rather than suck. Once two, a child should be consuming a diet which resembles the Eatwell guide. Although your child will get some fluids from food (fruits, vegetables, soups, stews and yoghurts), it will only supply around 20% of their requirement. This means the remaining 80% must be met by consuming a variety of fluids; at least 6 to 8 (100-150ml) glasses of fluid each day (requirements can vary depending on physical activities levels and the weather).


Suitable fluids for 1-4 year olds include:


  • Water: The best option!

  • Milk: Whole milk should be given to children until they are 2 years old, as they need the extra energy and vitamins it contains. Semi-skimmed milk can be introduced from the age of 2. Skimmed and 1% milk aren’t suitable for children under 5 years old. Unsweetened milk alternatives, including soya, oat and almond milk, can be provided from the age of 1. Babies and children under 5 shouldn’t be given rice milk, as it may contain too much arsenic.


It's best to avoid fruit juice, although it can provide nutrients. Fruit juice is acidic and contains large amounts of fruit sugar (fructose), which increases the risk of tooth decay. If given, keep it to meal times and dilute. Also be mindful, as not all fluids count, for example, sugary and fizzy drinks, fruit juice drinks, squash and flavoured water. These are not suitable for this age group and are significant contributors to excess sugar consumption amongst children in the UK. In addition, tea, coffee and other drinks with added caffeine or stimulants are not recommended for young children.

CLCH training and support for oral health


The CLCH oral health team are providing online advice sessions for parents/carers on children’s oral health via MS Teams or telephone. Parent’s support service is offered daily, 15 minute slots available via advance email booking. Please book an appointment via clcht.ohp@nhs.net.

Winter Clothing


It is getting colder outside. Please ensure your child comes to nursery in warm clothing. Due to COVID, we have to have the classroom well ventilated wth all doors and windows open, in line with government guidelines, which means it is cold everywhere in the nursery. Staff wear coats inside as well as out in these times.

Lots of children have the same coat/ gloves/ hat /scarf, so please put your childs names on their things, it help enourmously when things go missing.



Christmas - Date in the diary


We are starting to get ready for Christmas! The full time children's Christmas lunch will be 17th December.

We will be sharing a Christmas Carol concert with you on Thursday 17th( 3pm-3.30pm). Wrap up warm it will be outside. The children's Christmas party will be on the last day which is Friday 18th December( 11-1pm).


The children will be making Christmas cards which you will be able to purchase for your family and friends. Details over the next couple of weeks.
