Dear Parents/ Carers,

Welcome to Mary Paterson Nursery School. The new children have all settled in beautifully and it feels as though they have been here for a long time! Our returning children seem very grown up and they are now mini teachers helping the new children to find their feet and get to know the routines. It is lovely to get to know you all as parents, I am sorry that we cannot allow you into the school due to the Government Guidelines for schools. Thank you for respecting the school routines in our bid to be a Covid safe environment, as much as is possible, for the staff who work here.

We would like to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity, as we do every year, by hosting a cake sale. Any donations gratefully received and the staff will bake treats for you to buy. This year, because of the pandemic, we are planning to have a cake stall outside the nursery on Friday 23rd October at 11am and 3pm. If the virus situation improves, we will hold a second event in the summer, whereby we can have a proper afternoon tea to raise funds for this worthy cause.

Now that the weather has changed, please make sure that your child has suitable, warm clothing. We are a Forest School which means we are outside in all weathers and we get very dirty! The children have been having great fun playing with the coats, which results in a mix up of whose coat hangs on which peg! Help us to help you; by writing their names in their coats, otherwise it is difficult to know who owns which coat.

Thank you.

Shoe laces

Difficult for three- four year old to manage.

Health and Safety- Children trip over laces and we do not have enough staff to keep tying up laces.

Let us work together to develop independence and confidence.

Velcro

Easy for children to learn how to manage. They love the sense of independence of being able to manage their own needs.

Parents meetings will be the week of the 9th November. A list for a timeslot will be put up on the 2 year old door/ 3-4 year old garden gate. Your family worker will then phone you at the time on the list for a phone consultation.

Lunch times

The children who stay for lunch are so well behaved. It is a special time where children eat and talk together and learn how to use cutlery and develop good manners. Thank you for not sending anything nut based in, as we do have children with significant allergies and we protect them by being a nut free school. We note a few children are bringing chocolate in their packed lunches. We try to encourage healthy eating and tooth care, so we ask that no chocolate and sweets come into nursery. Thank you for working with us to try to keep obesity and tooth decay down.

School Fund

Nursery schools have been impacted by years of budget cuts and we are struggling to survive.

We ask parents for a £2 weekly donation to enable us to take children to a café, to go shopping and a host of other enriching experiences. We take children out on a weekly basis, on trips linked to children’s interests and learning needs. If £2 is difficult, we are truly grateful for anything you can afford. This fund makes a huge difference to the experiences we can offer children, so thank you for your support.

Forest School

Our mini bus will be coming back after its yearly check and MOT at the garage this week. After half term we will be going to Forest School on a Wednesday. We go to Hampstead Heath and the children learn how to create shelter, climbing and walking in different terrains, identifying trees, insects and birds. Phonics in the woods, consists of call and response, identifying environmental sounds. Also, one may argue, the most important characteristics of learning, they develop confidence, independence and resilience.

The children go in groups of 10, led by fully qualified Forest school teachers for a 5 week session which builds skills week upon week. Maggie will be in contact to let parents know the first group of children and we will post a video on our website about how to prepare for forest school.

Half Term is 26th October – 30th October.
